I was curious to understand what it implied Round & Square  for management…

All the natural elements are made in a kind of round shape, the square is created by man to make easier the storage and transportation. I ran into this discovery one day, it opens a door to me to see what it implies for management: Square and Round.

In the book written by Jean-François Zobist, the ex-CEO of FAVI “La belle hisoire de FAVI “, I found some insights. Here below I abstracted some inspiring ideas about Square and Round management.

The Round management implies more Yes & And, it allows the co-existence between black & white, right & wrong, adapt to the present; on the contrary the Square management lives in the Past & Future, trying to find out why we made mistake, and how to prevent the eventual risk… the Square implies a choice of Or, willing to make everything clear.

Recently I watched  Yves Morieux’s talk in TED, he perfectly illustrate How too many rules at work keep us from getting things done, by showing a 4x100m top-level competition. The performance was measured collective, the best single runner multiply by 4 times might not result automatically in the best performance. What’s the clear accountability between the 2 runners? 95 meters, 96 meters, or 97 meters? And in the video I am inspired to see how the runner pass the stick to the next runner, shouting to alert her arrival, encouraging the team mate, and making sure the stick passed well, all the gestures might reduce her own speed, her individual performance, but increase the chance to get the collective champion!

As Yves mentioned in this Ted talk “ Clarity, Accountability, Measurement” are the efficient KPIs for a simple organization, but in a complex organization, they might work even against productivity, because the people are reluctant to collaborate. To me, it illustrated the classical Square management’s limits. Only Square, our management will go to the dead-end…

Round management privileges the emotional vision, embraces uncertainty, doesn’t intent to control the future; Round management focus on Why, not on How; Round management runs more often with Common sense, feelings, than Logic, rational.

Chinese Ancient people called sky Round, as they saw sun and moon switch everyday; they called ground Square as they perceived it still as a dead object. Round sky & Square ground is synonym of wholeness.

The world is changing rapidly, maybe, to the classical Square management, we might need to add a touch of Roundness, and let Square+Round management epoch coming to us…
